[MG100] Week 20.40 The Price You Pay
I had so many things I was thinking of writing about this week until the Marshall Monday call this morning, and now the only thing I can think about is Marshall’s latest insight “The price you pay when you don't pay the price”. This is an ongoing conversation that is going to evolve, for the moment, chew on this. E=MC2 works for us too - except it reads more C-BR2 in which the cost is the benefit x the risk squared. Cost includes your time, money, relationship (family, friends), health, comfort, opportunities. It is a sobering view of life in which we recognize that much of what we do comes with a tradeoff and we are working with finite inputs (even Jeff Bezos does not have infinite time)
You pay the price when you don’t pay the price is a wake-up call. It is ringing a bell that says that even when you don’t make the calculation, the calculation is made for you. Want to be fit and work out 2 hours a day - great, where is that 14 hours come from? As my guru Harry Kraemer says, everyone has the same 168 hours to spend every week. No one gets an extra hour. So when you take time to do one thing, you have to take it from something else.
On my better days, I like to think that there are times that I am paying a price and other times that I am making an investment. My happy place at the moment is binge-watching West Wing - the time I spend it the price I pay for living in the world of my dreams. On the other hand, when I am collaborating with some of the fabulous 100 Coaches such as Sharon Melnick, Oshoke Abalu, or Mark Thompson I am making an investment. The time I spend will pay off in my feeling of accomplishment in supporting their growth and the growth of the organization and is fully aligned with my mission of cultivating leaders and curating community.
Time. Money. Relationships. Thanks to Marshall, I am a little more aware of their value and how to assess the tradeoffs that they imply. At the end of the call, Marshall asked us to send him examples of times we took a risk and failed. I would invite you to do the same. The opportunity in the challenge of COVID is to see what we did not see before, and for me, understanding that there is a price to pay when you don't pay the price is one of them. In MG100, we help great leaders become outstanding. We also have the unique opportunity and responsibility to support leaders in cultivating a healthy workplace culture, where all employees can do their best work. Sounds basic — but the reality is, leaders run into a myriad of obstacles and they need help navigating the ever-present, potential pitfalls and downfalls – think Enron, Wells Fargo, Theranos, Boeing, etc. Organizational politics, conflicts of interest, and pressure to perform create a range of scenarios that require courage in action and a steady ethical compass. In most cases, building a healthy corporate culture can prevent a future train wreck. In this interactive session, former Fortune Global 50 exec and consultant Amii Barnard-Bahn will guide you through a simulation based on real and messy situations that Amii and her clients have faced, in order to help you:
Balance common business challenges with workplace culture, risk appetite, and your individual consulting style
Identify some of the more, subtle leadership roadblocks and patterns
Have fun and team with your MG100 colleagues in solving complex scenarios and share leadership best practices based on your experience
Amii has led strategic initiatives, shaped culture, and coached leaders and executive teams from Fortune 500 companies to startups and nonprofits. Get ready to engage your heart and mind in an inspiring and robust discussion of what it means to develop leaders that grow healthy workplace cultures!
