Week 20.48 The New Year of Gratitude
I was surprised this year when I started receiving many wishes of thanks and gratitude during Thanksgiving. A quick check of friends and acquaintances confirmed that they too were receiving these messages. Perhaps it was due to the pandemic and being isolated, perhaps it was the release of the stress of politics. Whatever the cause, the consequence was Thanksgiving felt like the beginning of a New Year of Gratitude.
I had to observe the rise of gratitude for some time. Chester Elton, of course, has been preaching gratitude for a long time. Peter Bregman’s Leading with Emotional Courage and Taryn Marie Stayskal’s Gratit-osity expand on that thinking. A scant 10 months ago, I heard Harry Kraemer wax poetic on the power of Values Leadership and how important gratitude is in leadership. Garry Ridge continues to sit atop the leaderboard for beloved CEOs because of his commitment to gratitude. And I listened to Alan Mulally talk about loving up his employees in the most industrial of companies (and also getting rewarded with unheard of approval ratings)
I am fascinated by how the pandemic has unhinged so many of our beliefs. Meetings that had to be held in person, even when they involved flying long distances, are now held over ZOOM. Smelling tomatoes and squeezing avocados was necessary to buy groceries and many of us will not return to strolling the aisles and continue to rely on home delivery. Given the stress of our moment and the scarcity of other pleasures, we may discover compassion and gratitude, a return to our values and internalize what the studies and science all show. Compassion creates value. Gratitude is good. Good values are good business.
Week 1 of 52 weeks of Giving (Thanks Pamay): One Acre fund
I am so excited to announce that I am taking the Pamay 52 Weeks of Gratitude challenge. Each week I am going to make a gift to a different charity and share it with you here. I am delighted to kick off my year of gratitude with the ONE ACRE FUND https://oneacrefund.org which was introduced to me by Harry Kraemer. “We supply 1 million smallholder farmers with everything they need to grow more food and earn more money. One Acre Fund envisions a world where all farmers have big harvests, healthy families, and rich soil.”
Did you get the “housekeeping newsletter” announcing the annual event? If not, please email admin@100coaches.com so we can make sure you get it.
Get ready for the Ministry of Common Sense!
The Ministry of Common Sense shows you how to restore common sense, and enjoy the benefits that come with it! (and we mean real company benefits). And yes – there are indeed real Ministries – set up within companies – with the sole purpose of vacuum cleaning all the useless rules, regulations, and day-to-day trivialities we all can live without.
What has happened to common sense? And how can we get it back? Companies, it seems, have become so entangled in their own internal issues, and further beset by reams of invisible red tape, that they’ve lost sight of their core purpose. Inevitably, they pay the price.
The Ministry of Common Sense is released on Jan 19th, 2021! Martin is supporting the release with a series of webinars, speeches, and amazing interactive workshops that bring the content and employees to life! This is like an augmented reality book launch. To found out more, please reach out to Amber Vilhauer Martin’s amazing launch engagement leader or Martin directly.

During this week’s DLYL Virtual Tea #36, December 2, Wednesday, 5 PM EDT
Ayse's amazing weekly Virtual Tea will use metaphors to design our life in the new normal. Just like a caterpillar does to become a butterfly, we are also going through a metamorphosis. What are we letting go of during our caterpillar stage? What are we learning during the messy middle of our cocoon stage? And what is going to help us take off and fly as we leave the shelter of our cocoons now as butterflies? We will explore this metaphor individually and then go into breakout rooms to collaborate and learn from each other.
“Human thinking depends on metaphor. We understand new or complex things in relation to things we already know.” ― Jonathan Haidt,/ The Happiness Hypothesis: Putting Ancient Wisdom to the Test of Modern Science
In place of having a special guest this week, I wanted to make more time for in-depth conversation, collaboration, and the chance to learn from each other’s expertise, insights, and creativity. Design the Life You Love is about being more intentional about what you want in your life and offers a framework for developing that intentionality. It’s inclusive to everyone, from 13 to 90 years old. With that in mind, please feel free to forward this invitation to your friends, who are younger and older.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO PUT AN ANNOUNCEMENT IN THE NEWSLETTER - JUST EMAIL ME AND I WILL DO MY BEST. COMPLETE THOUGHTS AND SENTENCES WORK BEST.
And, as always, thank you, Marshall, for making all of this possible
With love and gratitude
Scott
