Week 21.1 Check Your S Curves
I think that Whitney Johnson’s thinking is some of the clearest and most profound that I have ever read. Don’t get me wrong, there are lots of great thinkers in the 100 Coaches and unlike my friends at Thinkers50, I am not brave enough to want to rank them. But Whitney’s work is something that I find myself coming back to over and over again, and the New Year is a great time to revisit and apply her thinking on S Curves to our life. The S Curve is just a fact of life - it is the expression of birth, growth, and decay over time. Businesses have S Curves. The earth has S Curves. People have S Curves.
The beauty of the S Curve as Whitney applies them, is that they give us the opportunity to look at our life and analyze where we were, where we are, and where we want to go as a function of ambition over time. The simple version is that in all new things we begin by learning until we develop competency which leads to confidence, credibility, and growth through overcoming challenges. And then we reach mastery, a time in which increased competency leads to inertia and comfort. As I said, I am inspired by this work and there is no time like the present to put it into practice.
Look back and consider what you are doing using the model of the S Curve. Where are you on the work that is most important to you? Are you still striving to understand it, are you gaining competency at an ever-accelerating pace, thrilled by the gains and challenges? Or do you feel confident in your knowledge, perhaps a little bored, not sure where to push yourself? Quickly use the S Curve model for the things you care about most, including relationships.
Plot your curves and consider if you are where you want to be on each one. There is no judgment here - any place on the curve is ok, this is simply a way to visualize where you are on the journey. You have the ability to disrupt yourself at any time and jump the curve to start something new. The key is being aware of where you are now. From that vantage point, you can look forward and make some eyes wide open decisions about how the changes you want to make and where you want to make them. This year, you may find some comfort curves that in other times you would have considered boring and time to make a move. We may have thought we could plan the future in 2019. After 2020, we know that disruption is out there whether we want it or not.
In 2012 Whitney wrote “The S-curve mental model makes a compelling case for personal disruption. We may be quite adept at doing the math around our future when things are linear, but neither business nor life is linear, and ultimately what our brain needs, even requires, is the dopamine of the unpredictable. More importantly, as we inhabit an increasingly zig-zag world, the best curve you can throw the competition is your ability to leap from one learning curve to the next.” [Throw Your Life a Curve] I would suggest to you that there is no time like January 2021 to take this wisdom to heart and take control of your personal disruption by working with your S Curves. January is Common Sense Month - time to join the Ministry (Martin Lindstrom)
How come every Zoom call lasts exactly 1 hour no matter how mundane the call is? And why did all the toilet-breaks disappear as Zoom became everyday work life in our bedrooms?
Why has a simple action like buying office equipment turned into a 6-people-committee decision followed by a 5-level approval process?
When a 264-page PPT deck kicks off with “Welcome to the Christmas Party Planning Meeting”… it’s time to call the Ministry of Common Sense – to put an end to it once and for all! It’s time to get rid of the wasted time red tape, to remove the silly rules, and recover common sense to serve our customers better. Laser-beam insightful, side-splittingly funny, and packed with solutions, The Ministry Of Common Sense will show you how to transform your company. When you’ve stopped crying with laughter, that is…. Ministry of Common Sense
Starting on 13 January, Martin Lindstrom will share amazing stories about the nonsense that happens in the corporate world, give advice on how to reinstall common sense, and provide an actionable toolkit on how to eliminate bureaucratic red tape. Welcome to the Ministry of Common Sense with Martin Lindstrom
The one person who should be your new best friend in 2021 (Chester Elton)
While we are most likely a supportive friend to others, we often do not act that way with ourselves. In other words, we say things to ourselves that we would never say to anyone else—especially someone we truly think of as a friend.
So, as we close out this crazy year, Chester offers an invitation? Why not make your inner voice your friend? Make that voice positive, make it someone who will love you unconditionally. Make it the voice you use when your real best friend needs you to be there. I will promise your days will be a little lighter and you will smile more because there is nothing better than having a best friend you can count on.
Here’s to a great New Year to you and yours: Where all our friends and family will be safe. And here’s to tuning our inner voices to a happier channel, one that will lift us into a better 2021. Read full story here
