Week 23.38 Becoming Coachable Launches

The week has come—our book, Becoming Coachable, is live! The story of this book has been years in the making. Seven years ago, Marshall Goldsmith called me up with an idea: to teach 15 people everything he knew about coaching. As someone who loves interacting with interesting and impactful people and enjoys building community, I was immediately excited about the project. I quickly became a student of the new (to me) world of coaching. The 100 Coaches Community was born. A few years later, a natural development was to create the 100 Coaches Agency, specializing in helping great leaders connect with great coaches through our proprietary curation process. And as a leader of a coaching community, I became coach curious myself. In my first few attempts to get coaching, I struggled to get started. I ultimately learned that my problem was not in finding the right coach; the problem was that I needed to become coachable in order to receive coaching. That revelation—that the path to coaching began with me—opened up a world of expansion and growth for me. Marshall Goldsmith, Jacquelyn Lane, and I wrote our book Becoming Coachable because we want others to learn these lessons so that they too can unlock the treasure of growth and wisdom. This book came about in partnership with so many generous collaborators, friends, and supporters. We and the book are filled with love, gratitude, and wonder.

LOVE. This book is an amazing collaborative work between Marshall, Jacquelyn, and me with the support of the Amplify Publishing Group (100 Coaches Publishing) team, including Naren Aryal, Nina Spahn, and Sky W. It includes the collaboration of Leigh Buchanan, Stephen O’Shea, Nilofer Merchant, and Andy Martiniello. And it is also the product of the people I love and who love me and have influenced me on my journey to becoming coachable. It is easy for me to share the love of this moment with those I love, including my children, Jake Osman and Lily Osman; my fiance, Allegra Kochman; my parents; my siblings, Bart Osman and Jamie Handwerker; and our fantastic team at 100 Coaches, including Janice Gallen, Patrick Steichen, and Lisa Broderick. Special recognition goes to Jacquelyn’s husband, Michael D. Anderson for all the support and space he has given to this work. And to Lyda Goldsmith, whom we have come to know as a true partner and recognize as the wind in Marshall’s sails.

GRATITUDE. For the past seven years, Marshall and I have been building the 100 Coaches Community and now the 100 Coaches Agency on basic principles of gratitude and supporting the flourishing of individuals who have the ability to impact others greatly. This book springs from that well of generosity, and I am so grateful to all of the amazing coaches, leaders, and thinkers who make up the community. The insights in the book come, quite literally, from their hundreds of insights and centuries of collective coaching experience. It has been our privilege to coalesce that knowledge into this book and bring it to the work of coaching. In particular, we would like to thank Mark C. Thompson for writing the forward and to Alan Mulally for being an early reader and supporter. Thank you to all who were interviewed and shared their stories in the pages of Becoming Coachable. We had too many thinking partners and supporters to name here; our hearts overflow. There is only one thing we can say: THANK YOU!

WONDER. This book began with the insight that in the two-ingredient recipe of coach and coachee, the more important ingredient is the coachee. And yet, there was no book available to help the leader prepare for the coaching experience, potentially one of the most transformative relationships and fulfilling processes of their career. After thinking about what was needed, we offered insights into how coaching works and what you need to do to become coachable. To our amazement, when we arrived at that moment in the manuscript, we found it was not enough. Having accomplished what we set out to accomplish, we discovered that there was more inside us. With our sense of wonder, we asked the question, “To what end?” Our answer was that we coach leaders to contribute to global flourishing so that leaders become better leaders, better human beings, and create flourishing for those they love and lead. Like a great coachee, we are filled with awe for how far we have come and with wonder for what lies ahead.
